Domperidone/Motilium: A Commentary

For example: in Asian countries like India, Domperidone is available over the counter for only a few pennies per dose. Where as in countries like Canada, England, Australia and New Zealand, Domperidone is more expensive and available only through prescription. And in some countries, illegal to import through online purchases.

Since Domperidone has never been licensed for sale in the United States, one might think it would be unavailable for purchase legally. However, whether or not Domperidone is available for purchase legally, would seem to depend on who you are and who you know! Contrary to popular opinion, Domperidone is legal for purchase in the United States through online sales and Compounding Pharmacies, as long as you have a valid prescription. Getting the prescription is the problem

In 2004, the United States Federal Drug and Food Administration, (FDA), issued a letter warning that purchase of Domperidone was illegal through both Online and Compounding Pharmacies. However in 2006, the FDA rescinded that letter, and posted guidelines for issuing prescriptions for Domperidone.

In layman's terms, the FDA guidelines basically state: if Acid Reflux Disease is uncontrollable by FDA approved medications, a doctor may issue a valid prescription for Domperidone. And with proper paper work, Domperidone may be legally purchased through Online and Compounding Pharmacies. However, the FDA guidelines do not authorize prescriptions for use of Domperidone as a galactagogue.

To legally obtain a prescription for Domperidone in the United States, you must have Acid Reflux Disease, and your doctor must agree Domperidone is the best treatment for that disease. As with many things in life, it would seem getting a prescription for Domperidone would depend on who you are and who you know!

Legal or not, most women in the United States who use Domperidone as a galactagogue, simply order it online without a prescription. As long as the orders are small, there have been few problems. Other than an occasional confiscation at the port of entry, most shipments have arrived without incident.

Even though prosecution is unlikely, this factor must be considered before purchasing and importing Domperidone into the United States. What may be ignored by the United States Judicial system today, could become a focal point of prosecution tomorrow.

Conclusion:
Whether natal or induced, lactation is the body's natural response to proper nipple and milk sinus stimulation. As long as the breasts have not been damaged by disease, trauma or surgery, every woman has the ability to induce lactation and adequately breast feed an adopted infant or an adult lover.

The breast, generally characterized as the "Mammary Gland", is actually an amalgam of tiny organs and ducts. Each breast embodies from 15 to 25 sacs, each containing approximately 100 tiny milk producing Alveolar glands, arranged in the shape of a rosette around the nipple. Each of these minute milk producing Alveolar glands are connected to as many as 25 milk sinuses, (located beneath the nipple and areola), through a complex maze of interconnecting milk ducts.

When latched and suckled correctly, signals are sent to the Brain from the nipples, (via the nervous system). In response to these signals, the Brain stimulates the Pituitary gland to increase secretion of the hormones Prolactin and Oxytocin. When these milk producing hormones reach the mammary glands and milk ducts, the nervous system stimulates the Letdown Reflex. In response to the Letdown Reflex, the mammary glands begin producing milk.
