Mary Magdalene

Of the few facts known: Mary Magdalene was a follower of Jesus of Nazareth, present at his execution, discoverer of his empty tomb, and the first Jesus appeared to after his resurrection. Outside of a few references in ancient documents, little was recorded of her life. However; as obscure as her life was: few other women have provoked as much myth and speculation.

In the speculation of some, Mary Magdalene was prostitute, a woman of sin saved by Jesus. Many believe she was a reformed harlot, who became a devout follower of Jesus of Nazareth after her repentance. However, other than a vague reference to an unnamed woman, nowhere in the Christian Bible does it say Mary Magdalene was a prostitute.

Others believe, Mary Magdalene was the wife of Jesus of Nazareth, and they had children together: and not only did they have children together, their descendants still walk among us today! The truth was in the Bible all the time, unveiled by the Da Vinci Code. And in Leonardo Da Vinci's painting of the Last Supper, on the right hand of Jesus sits a woman. Could this be Mary Magdalene?

As compelling as this evidence may be, I don't think Leonardo Da Vinci was present at the Last Supper, since Jesus of Nazareth was executed by crucifixion over 1400 years before Leonardo Da Vinci was born. And as far as his "coded" messages, the Christian Bible was originally translated from early Greek and Hebrew texts into Latin. And by the time Leonardo Da Vinci was born, the Christian Bible had again been translated into French and English. It would be unlikely any coded messages could have survived this many translations.

Still other's believe she was the thirteenth disciple of Jesus Christ, endowed with Divine Gifts. Perhaps she was, and perhaps more. However, we may never know truth of Mary Magdalene: for the reality of her life has faded into the obscurity of time. Perhaps in truth, the myths of Mary Magdalene represent the many facets of the female Psyche.
